Using iTunes is now illegal under UK copyright law

Last year, in late 2014, the UK Government legalized copying media for private use which is a practice many UK citizens already thought to be legal.

The UK Intellectual Property Office stated that the changes to UK law were “in the best interest” of media consumers and that they would bring copyright law into the 21st century, by allowing copying of purchased and already owned media.

However, the new regulation was did not last long at all. Fearing a loss of income, several music groups objected at the UK High Court, which happened to agree with the music industry, that the new legislation is unlawful. As a result of the court ruling, the changes were overturned and the previous limitations were reinstated, once again outlawing the habits of millions of citizens living in England.

The Intellectual Property Office has explained that ripping a CD in iTunes is no longer permitted, and neither is backing up your computer if it contains copyrighted content. The IPO specifically notes that copying a CD to an MP3 player is not permitted.
