After 10 Years Of Photographing Homeless People, Photographer Discovers Her Own Father Among Them

Honolulu, Hawaii-based photographer and law student Diana Kim can trace her love of photography back to her father, who used to own a photography studio on O'ahu. Until just a few years ago, however, not much else connected father and daughter except for a strained relationship marked by disappointment, hurt, and absence. A chance encounter brought the two back together again, sparking an extraordinarily moving journey of love and forgiveness in the face of mental illness, homelessness, and hardship.

She learned about photography from her father, but lost touch with him when her parents divorced

In 2012, Kim was shocked to discover her father amongst the homeless she was was photographing


"He suffered from severe schizophrenia, and left untreated, he was not always responsive"



"She gave her old camera to her dad, in hopes of sparking his interest in photography and giving him something to look forward to. She wants him to stay in this good place"

After just a few months, he was significantly better. "It felt good to see him so health, and standing so tall again"
